Chlorine is a yellow-green, highly reactive gas with a choking, asphyxiating odor. As a member of the halogen family, it is denser than air, soluble in water and alkaline solutions, and readily dissolves in organic solvents such as carbon disulfide and carbon tetrachloride. It is easily compressed into a yellow-green liquid for storage and transport. Chlorine serves as a powerful oxidizing agent and a key raw material in the chlor-alkali industry, widely used for water and wastewater disinfection, production of organic and inorganic chemicals (including PVC, solvents, and pharmaceuticals), and as a bleaching agent in pulp and textile industries. It is typically transported as a liquefied compressed gas under pressure.
