Diborane is a colorless gas with an unpleasant odor at room temperature and pressure. As a highly reactive boron hydride, it is very unstable and slowly decomposes into hydrogen and higher boranes at room temperature, with decomposition accelerating as temperature increases. Diborane is spontaneously flammable in air, particularly upon contact with moist air, producing a characteristic green flame. It is typically diluted with nitrogen, argon, helium, or hydrogen for safe handling. Diborane serves as a critical p-type dopant gas in semiconductor manufacturing, a precursor for chemical vapor deposition of boron-containing films, and a key raw material for producing various borane compounds and boron-based materials, typically transported as a liquefied compressed gas in specialized cylinder systems.
