Silane (SiH4)

Silane is a colorless gas with a characteristic garlic-like odor. As a compound of silicon and hydrogen, it is significantly more chemically reactive than alkanes, readily oxidizing and often spontaneously igniting upon contact with air. It is soluble in water but nearly insoluble in most organic solvents. Silane serves as a critical specialty gas in semiconductor microelectronics for preparing various thin films, including monocrystalline, microcrystalline, polycrystalline silicon, silicon oxide, silicon nitride, and metal silicides. It is also essential for photovoltaic solar cell production and flat-panel display manufacturing, typically transported as a liquefied compressed gas.
